- Keep displayed books on shelves. Shelves can be made of wood or metal but any sharp edges or protruding screws should be removed to avoid damaging the book. The shelf should be at least 5cm from the wall to protect from damp and improve airflow.
- High temperatures should be avoided so books; so books should not be stored near radiators.
- The ideal temperature range for storing books is 16'C to 19'C.
- Basements are not recommended for storing books.
- Avoid smoking in your library.
- Plants and carpets are not recommended in your library. You should also avoid allowing cracks to develop in your walls. This is to avoid attracting insects.
- A small book should stand on its end and you should pull it from the shelf by the centre of the spine, not the top. Regular pulling of the top of the spine will cause damage. Heavy books should be stacked on their sides.
- Long-term exposure to natural light can damage books. Florescent lights are recommended, with filters to eliminate UV rays.
- You should clean your library every 2 to 3 weeks.
- A few drops of lavender oils will keep your books in tip top condition and smelling nice.
